Make a Memorable Trip to Portugal With These 5 Activities

Portugal is among the most beautiful countries to visit in Europe. With a rich history, beautiful scenery, unique architecture, and beautiful Atlantic beaches, Portugal is an amazing destination for anyone who loves to travel. With so many different things to do in this beautiful country, it can be tough to narrow down your activities. For this reason, we have compiled a list of activities that will make your trip to Portugal not only enjoyable, but memorable. Here are five activities to make your trip to Portugal one for the books.

1. Visit Porto

Depending on what type of traveler you are, you may be considering staying in a number of cities, or making one your home base to explore over the course of your visit. If you are trying to decide on a primary destination for your visit, Porto is among the best to choose from.

The beautiful city of Porto is a coastal escape located in the northwestern region of the country. What was once a trade center and exit point for the explorers of old is now a stunning piece of history and culture. Porto sits on a river lined with medieval architecture that must be walked through and experienced. Yet, the city also features architecture of the Baroque era, Renaissance, and Victorian eras. All of these mesh together in beautiful colors, displays and all around cultural beauty.

As if merely walking around Porto isn’t enough, Porto is also where the dessert wine ‘port’ is from. Thus, if you are a wine lover, Porto is a must visit, a city that you cannot only experience but taste. Although overshadowed by its wine, Porto is also full of delicious sea food and culturally diverse eats.

If you are visiting Porto for a long time, or for a day, there are plenty of places for luggage storage in Porto, and an easy to navigate public transportation system. Though you will be yearning to walk through these beautiful streets.

2. Drink Wine, and Lots of It

Portugal has so many wineries and vineyards that it is carved up into wine districts. As you look through your map, you may find a number of “Vihno Regional[s].” These are “Wine Regions,” each of which has different rules in regards to their wine, and has different grapes and methods. With 14 of these to visit in the country of Portugal, we recommend you visit at least a few vineyards and wineries, and immerse yourself in the scents and flavors of Portuguese wine. The environment here is perfect for wine grapes to grow, and many of the vineyards are ancient, with wine makers who have been masters of their craft since before the U.S. Constitution was signed.

Wherever you go, find the local wine, learn about it, and dive into new things. The Portuguese people are very kind to those who are interested and willing to experience their culture.

3. Visit a Few Castles

It may not be your first thought when you think of Portugal, but there are a plethora of beautiful castles to see. Due to its history and location, many of Portugal’s castles are massive and lavish, and have not been plagued by war as much as a number of castles throughout the rest of Europe. These castles are also influenced by diverse cultures, ranging from the Spanish, to Middle Eastern, and even Viking influences. Locations like the National Palace of Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Castelo de Almourol, and Castelo de Marvão are all fantastic forts to be visited and experienced.

4. Go to the Beach

There are plenty of beaches to bask in throughout Portugal, and all of them are beautiful and unique. Many of these beaches are supported by rich historic towns with long histories ranging back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Because of this, you can easily find food and lodging, as well as plenty of activities surrounding these beautiful locations. If you are struggling to choose a beach, consider Albufeira, Lagos, or Porto’s beaches.

It should be noted that this is the Atlantic Ocean, not the Mediterranean Sea that these beaches border. While it may be warm to walk around on the beach, the water is usually a bit chilly. While a swim is always plausible, be prepared for cooler ocean water.

5. Immerse Yourself

While there are plenty of things to do in Portugal, one of the best may be to simply immerse yourself in Portuguese culture. Eat food, drink wine, walk around, and speak to the people you meet. The best activities will likely be found by talking to locals and being willing to step out of your comfort zone.
